3 Fun Fall Activities in Nantucket, MA

When planning a trip to Nantucket, MA this fall, you’ll probably feel overwhelmed with the number of activities to choose from. Whether it be the many local festivals to visit, the delicious seasonal foods to try or the many hiking trails, there’s something for everyone to explore during the fall season.

Make sure to do your research before heading to Nantucket and you’ll have a trip unlike any other.

Cranberries In Bag

Check out the Nantucket Cranberry Festival

One of the most anticipated festivals on Nantucket is back after a year hiatus. The Nantucket Cranberry Festival is returning for 2021 but will be a bit different than in years past due to COVID 19 safety concerns.

Instead of being held on a single weekend and drawing large crowds, the Nantucket Conservation Foundation made the decision to hold the festival across several weekends and has deemed October “Cranberry Month”.

The festival begins on October 9 where the first batch of cranberries will be for sale. The festival will then run each weekend for the remainder of the month and will feature guided tours through the Milestone Cranberry Bog, farm to table tours, pop up Nanpuppet shows for children and much more.

Take in the breathtaking fall foliage on a hike

Nantucket has many hiking trails to choose from and there is no better time than the fall to explore them.

These trails are perfect for even the most novice hikers and are a great way to relax, take in fresh air and see stunning fall foliage and seaside views. There will be no shortage of photo opportunities and you’ll be sure to create lasting memories on any of the hiking trails on the island.

Some of the more popular trails include Sanford Farm and Tupancy Links. An entire list of trails, as well as guides and maps can be found here.

Try your hand at scalloping

Although sea scallops can be had year-round at your favorite seafood restaurant, there is only a short window to harvest them on Nantucket. Commercial scalloping begins on November 1st, but visitors can try their hand at “scalloping” throughout October at Madaket and Monomoy harbors at low tide.

There is a short process to go through, including the obtaining of a permit at the police station and renting a few supplies from Brant Point Marine, but it is considered one of the most exciting things for tourists to try when visiting the island.

If you’re visiting Nantucket this fall and checking out any of these activities, we suggest renting a bike from our team at Nantucket Bike Shop.

We offer a wide selection of bikes for rent including adult bikes, child bikes, tandem bikes and more to help you easily navigate around the island. To reserve a bike(s) for your trip or if you have any other questions, feel free to give us a call at 1-800-770-3088.
