Hydration Tips For Bike Riding in the Summer Heat

While performing any physical activity, it’s important to hydrate before, during, and after your exercise. Especially in the summer heat. When your body is dehydrated, you can experience negative effects such as fatigue, confusion, and other irritations.

If you want to perform your best while taking care of your body, make sure to follow these tips:

How Should You Hydrate Before Your Workout?

Many cyclists prefer to drink large quantities before their ride because the less fluid you lose during the ride, the cooler you stay, and you tend to perform a lot better when you feel cool. Most riders should aim to drink about 12 to 16 ounces of water about 4 to 6 hours before your ride. Then, 2 hours before your journey, make sure to drink another 12 ounces of water.

How Often Should You Drink Water During Your Bike Ride?

Although many people will only drink water when they’re feeling thirsty during their ride, this often isn’t encouraged. The purpose of drinking water during your trip is to help replenish the water you lose through your sweat. Rehydrating during your ride will help you ride stronger and will keep you motivated.

The amount of water you consume all depends on the length of your ride. Try taking a couple of large sips of water every 15 to 20 minutes during your ride. Drinking too much water at once can cause you to feel sick, so it’s better to space them out.

Hydrating After Your Bike Ride

Your body just worked extremely hard during your ride, so don’t forget to replenish it after your ride. You should start rehydrating immediately after your ride. This also includes eating a high-protein or a small meal to help replace the fluids and electrolytes you lost.

Plan Out Your Ride

If you know that you are going on a long sweat-inducing bike ride, make sure that you plan accordingly. Planning your distance and water breaks will help you stay healthy, hydrated, and feeling good throughout your ride.
